Terms of Service

Last updated: 10 May 2026

1. Acceptance of terms

By creating an account on Geniva you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service ("Terms"). If you do not agree, you may not use the service. These Terms form a legally binding agreement between you and Joshua Hinder trading as Geniva, 124 City Road, London, EC1V 2NX ("Geniva", "we", "us").

Independence notice: Geniva is an independent platform created by students, for students. It has no affiliation with, endorsement from, sponsorship by, or involvement of the University of Liverpool. The University of Liverpool is not a party to these Terms and bears no responsibility for the operation of, or content on, this platform.

2. Eligibility

You may only use Geniva if you:

  • Are 18 years of age or older.
  • Are a currently enrolled student at the University of Liverpool and hold a valid @liverpool.ac.uk email address, confirmed during sign-up.
  • Have not been previously banned from Geniva.
  • Have the legal capacity to enter into a binding agreement.

By signing up you confirm that you meet these requirements. We reserve the right to verify eligibility and suspend accounts that do not comply.

3. Your account

You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account credentials. Do not share your password with anyone. You are responsible for all activity that occurs under your account.

You must provide accurate information when creating your account, including your real University of Liverpool email address. Creating a false identity or impersonating another person is prohibited.

Each person may hold only one Geniva account.

4. Acceptable use

You agree not to use Geniva to:

  • Post, share, or transmit content that is illegal, defamatory, abusive, threatening, hateful, or discriminatory on grounds of race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, disability, or any other protected characteristic.
  • Harass, bully, or intimidate other users.
  • Impersonate any person or entity, including Geniva staff or society committee members.
  • Spam other users with unsolicited messages or promotional content.
  • Attempt to gain unauthorised access to other accounts or to Geniva's systems.
  • Upload malware, viruses, or any code designed to disrupt the service.
  • Scrape, crawl, or systematically extract data from the platform without prior written permission.
  • Use the platform for any commercial purpose without prior written permission.
  • Facilitate or encourage any of the above.

5. Content

Ownership. You retain ownership of content you post on Geniva — posts, messages, and profile information. By posting content, you grant Geniva a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide licence to store, display, and distribute that content solely for the purpose of operating the service.

Content standards. You are solely responsible for content you post. All content must comply with applicable UK law, including the Online Safety Act 2023. We reserve the right to remove content that violates these Terms or that we determine to be harmful to users or the platform.

Anonymisation. If your account is deleted, your posts and comments are anonymised — your name and identity are removed — rather than deleted outright, so that community content is not destroyed.

Reporting. If you see content that violates these Terms, use the in-app report function.

6. Society committee members

Users who hold a committee role (president, secretary, treasurer, social secretary, or social media officer) within a society on Geniva accept additional responsibilities:

  • You are responsible for moderating your society's content and ensuring it complies with these Terms.
  • You must not misuse your committee access to remove members, post content, or take actions for personal benefit unrelated to the society.
  • You acknowledge that Geniva platform administrators may audit society activity and override committee decisions where necessary to enforce these Terms.
  • You agree that your committee role and associated actions may be recorded in the platform audit log.

7. Suspension and termination

We may suspend or permanently ban your account, at our discretion and without prior notice, if we reasonably believe you have violated these Terms, engaged in harmful behaviour, or if required by law. Serious violations (including illegal content or harassment) may be referred to the University of Liverpool or relevant authorities.

You may deactivate your account at any time in your profile settings. Following deactivation, there is a 30-day recovery period during which you can reactivate by logging back in. After that period, personal data is permanently deleted within 90 days. See our Privacy Policy for full retention details.

8. Disclaimer of warranties

Geniva is a student-run project provided "as is" and "as available" without any warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or uninterrupted availability. We make no guarantee that the service will be error-free, continuously available, or that data will not be lost.

9. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, Joshua Hinder shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of or inability to use Geniva — including loss of data, loss of profits, or loss of goodwill — even if advised of the possibility of such damages.

As Geniva is provided free of charge with no commercial consideration, our total aggregate liability to you for any claim shall not exceed £100.

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or any other liability that cannot be excluded under English law.

10. Changes to the service

We may modify, suspend, or discontinue Geniva (or any part of it) at any time, with or without notice. We are under no obligation to maintain the service or provide updates. This is a student project and cannot be relied upon for mission-critical purposes.

11. Changes to these terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. We will notify you of material changes via the platform. Your continued use of Geniva after changes take effect constitutes your acceptance of the updated Terms. The "last updated" date at the top of this page indicates the most recent revision.

12. Governing law and jurisdiction

These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes arising under or in connection with these Terms shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
